I have would like to show / modify all child objects for a master object. I use now the "reference set selector" widget but I would like to be able to use the styling options I have with the template template widget but also option to select/deselect child objects. Is this possible?

You could create a page showing the information styled as you need them to. Don't use the refference set selector. Build this page on your own. Add multi select to the template grid and add a button with custom association logic. This should solve your problem.
