Working on a document template for CVs I want to add a grey/black sidebar on the left of my pdf-document. I can achieve this with a fixed height on a cell, however when the data to the right of this cell exceed more than one page, the fixed height no longer applies on the new page and I end up with whitespace underneath instead of a second page with a bar from top to bottom. Any idea how to either put in a background image for all pages, or any other idea how to achieve this?

You could try creating the document without the sidebar. Then after this, overlay the document with another pdf that contains the sidebar. That way the sidebar won't take the data into consideration.
There is a java action called 'overlaypdf' in the appstore module community commons that can do this.
