My suggestion is to add a checkbox to the download from version control which can be used to determine whether or not the currently open project is closed while the selected one is being downloaded and opened. Maybe I am not alone with that; Most often I just would like to compare a specific revision or a branch with what I am currently working on eg. to compare when a complex merge needs to be done or just to check out and extract logic or modules from a different project for convenient re-usage.
